Clonidine – This is a blood-pressure medication that helps with the goosebumps and chills associated with opiate withdrawal. It can definitely take the edge off, and many people have used it to minimize their symptoms. This can also be habit-forming, and if used should only be taken for a short period of time, two weeks maximum.

Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs – NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin are pain-relievers that can help with muscle soreness from opiate withdrawal. They should be taken as prescribed due to being potentially harmful to the liver when the daily maximum dose is exceeded. I prefer natural remedies, but they can definitely help ease opiate withdrawal symptoms.

Another study that was published in The American Journal of Addictions found that out of 91 patients seeking methadone treatment, the ones that used cannabis had less opiate withdrawal symptoms.

Kratom – A tropical deciduous and evergreen tree, kratom (or kratum) is indigenous to Southeast Asia, where it’s leaves are chewed to uplift mood and to treat health problems. This opiate withdrawal remedy was banned from use in Thailand 70 years ago because it was reducing the Thai government’s tax revenue from opium distribution.

Kratom acts as an opioid-agonist, which means it binds to the opioid receptors, thereby easing opiate withdrawal symptoms. There are different strains and they are said to have different effects. Kratom is legal in the United States (a few strains are illegal or controlled in a few states) and every other country except Australia, Burma, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Kratom is usually ingested by making tea, swallowing capsules, or adding the powder to beverages.     I want to start immediately, but im super impatient. I know with things such as Suboxone, you’re supposed to wait atleast 12 hours after your dose to begin the suboxone process….( i never lasted longer than 4 hours..) Do i have to wait a certain amount of time before beginning this process??

    I’m so grateful for finding your site and the information you’ve so painstakingly detailed. It helped me get off a 16mg per day dilaudid habit. However I am BEGGING you to put a warning with your kratom recommendations because I am now dependent on kratom and having to strategize a kratom detox. I have the same withdrawal symptoms – although to a lesser degree – after fluctuating from 7g per day up to 30-40g of kratom per day for 10 months now. I know kratom can help with severe dependency on other opiates but it really should be advised that it be a short term option. Some people allegedly have no withdrawal off kratom but MANY do and become just as dependent on it as other opiates.

Yes, Kratom, benzos, gabapentinoids, and many other natural or pharmaceutical drugs have precautions, and of course each person is unique and will respond differently in the way remedies work or cause side effects etc. There’s a disclaimer at the bottom of the website on every page, stating this is all informational use only and not medical advice, and to always ask a doctor before trying any new medicines, natural drugs, supplements, etc. I would hope that each person would do more research than reading one article before trying something for detox, as it’s great to learn about what you’re taking in detail.

    This guy is ahead of his time….Let me just say that this man’s opiate Kik/ supplement game is strong.

    Man I can’t believe he had NAD in there, I think it was just coming out then. Matt, I’m sure u have but if u haven’t heard of NR or NMN, check them out. I just started taking sublingual NMN. Another I think involves some reading and experminting with is SOD, both of these sound absolutely I credible. I’m new to both so I don’t have any first hand experience with them, sides the few days I’ve been taking them, except for the articles/reviews/med journals I’ve read on them. Oh and also Curcumin I got. There’s prob 20 other I just discovered that I did lots of reading on that all sounds super good but I didn’t have the money. Do u have any experience with any of these?.. NAC, alpha gpc, backpa monnieri, citicoline, rhosiola rosea, vinpocetine, reservation, ptetostilbene,phosphatidyl serine and choline, alcar. And one thing I know nothing about is mushrooms but some people swear by them I guess. A couple that I ran across is reshi and lions mane. Just while I was looking up brain mushrooms on Amazon I took a look at a couple brands, these two impetticualt look amazing “Genius conscious” and “immune force”(not because of the brands,. Im not thing to promote anything, it was Cus of the ingredients, sorry if I’m not allowed to post stuff like that)

    Do you have any experience with hydrogenated water? It sounds really Interesting but could also be snake oil. What about tri iodine?

    Hello Matt, I accidentally came across this site as I was looking up Benadryl for easing withdrawal symptoms. My partner is cold turkeying methadone because he is tired of being jerked around at the methadone clinic and having most of his day consumed with their fruitless required activities. I’m grateful that you have come up with some solutions to the horrible withdrawal process. I also happen to be an acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist. A formula that I have found to be useful is Chai Hu Long Gu Mu Li Wan (teapills) or Tang (tea or granule form). It helps with sweating, etc and withdrawal symptoms. Currently, I have him on that formula plus marijuana. It helps but is not nearly enough. Now I will think about adding Elimidrol although the red dye is concerning and the anti-diarrheal.     Hi, I have read several of your posts about detoxing from opiates and am ordering supplements now. I ordered the extreme triangle, I am confused whether I need to buy the DLPA l tyrosine calm support ect. individually or buy the Elimidrol? I also have some Kratom from a local vendor. I saw that many people were asking questions you have answered in previous posts and hate to do the same if I am, I’m just scatter brained. Question: Is the best route Elimidrol AND the other supplements you mentioned?
    I am starting a detox of Norco. My (now previous) Dr. Had me on 180 pills a month for over two years. About 7mo ago my depression was getting really bad and my tolerance was building up to the point that I would take the entire rx in 2 weeks, and then about 2 or 3 months ago less than two weeks (like 20 pills a day) and after that was buying them at 12$ a pill….I know it’s crazy I didn’t realize what I was getting myself into or how badly this would affect me, but more importantly, my family, my brain just screams for more and I can’t shut it off, even tho I’m telling myself at the same time to stop taking so many, I’ve never had any kind of drug control me like that in my life, and to not realize it until I was in so deep. If you can respond soon that would be so helpful, I have tapered down to 3 a day, a couple days to be honest 5. (A lot better than 20) I didn’t schedule another appt for a refill and it’s been since the 16th of Jan that I’d be able to refill but haven’t, and I want to stick with this, I just can’t live like this, I’m watching life tick by and I don’t want to waste anymore time feeding this addiction.     Roxie Teagues posted a question in the past which went unanswered but I too would like to know, what is the best way to begin when someone can only afford 1 or 2 supplements initially?

    I plan to read more through the site but after a lifetime of using opiates, I’ve made the decision today that I MUST get this monkey off my back. Which supplements would be the best to start with while tapering down? As time goes I will pick up more supplements to help with the withdrawls after the taper is finished.

      If I only had the money to buy 1 supplement, it would be Elimidrol or Calm Support. If I had enough money to buy two supplements, the next one would be vitamin C and use mega-doses of it.

    Thank you Matt for all the information, I have been taking hydrocodone for almost 6 years, I’ve decided I’m ready you quit, I want my life back. I’m gonna try the mega dose of vitamin c along with calm support and dlph and l-tyrosine. I have a very busy work and home life. Can’t take off from work. Wish me luck.     I’d like to say thank you for what you do!! I’ve been a suboxone patient for 4 years, upon asking Doc to reduce me he said I wasn’t ready??? I believe he’s not ready to loose my 240.00 coming through the door every month!! I’ve been reading every post you’ve got here & now feel so educated on my approach to finally becoming free of any & all opiates! Should anyone read this and be on Subs as a beginner here’s a thought I’d wish someone would’ve told me back in the day………..Subs are only meant to be used short term to wean off pain pill (opiates) very good medicine that I don’t disagree with however to keep someone on this medication for there own personal gain, I do completely disagree with!!!!! I’ve been working on this tapering plan on my own & feel that with all this help you give Matt I’m going to win!! I truly am so thankful to you, and for you being for us 🙂 Jackie

    My name is Cesar I’m about to get off opiate use that Ivery been on for two years. I have clonidine. 2 mg tablets and ondansetron odt 4mg tablets. Would that help and I also have suboxin but every time I used it in felt more severe withdrawls. What would u think is best way to go about it for starting withdrawal. My main problem usually is no sleep and restless legs. If I can get passed that I would be more likely to stop using in general

      If suboxone made your withdraws worse then you used it wrong. You are supposed to wait at least 12 hours after you took your last opiate to take suboxone. It works best if you want 24 hours.

    What do you do if your reward system is destroyed? I had a series of horrid tears, rotator cuff both shoulders, one inoperable the other was repaired by a butcher and was more painful afterwards! Also tore bicep tendon and was encouraged NOT to have it repaired by a surgeon. Shortly thereafter i had a fall that caused serious damage to my lower back. I have multilevel lumbar stenosis and disc herniations and tears as a result. I was prescribed 70 mg oxycodone per day that was increased to 30mg oxycodone 6x per day plus fentanyl patch which got as high as 150mg over a number of years. My pain seemed well managed but shortly after having my fentanyl patch dose increased i had sudden severe panic and anxiety and cognitive issues come out of nowhere. I told the doctor and he said he never heard of such a thing. I asked for Suboxone to come off this crap and was funneled into an addiction protocol where i was treated like dog excrement. Ripped off all pain meds and put on 32 mg Suboxone a day! I started reading up on it and decided that was insane. I ended my relationship with pain doctor and immediately cut the dose to 6mg per day…then tapered off subs over a 9 month period. I was free from all opioids for 5 months, but the constant pain and severe anhedonia and pleasure deadness caused me to seek help via injections and said doctor put me on low dose percocet. I’m stuck in this rut now, marginally effective injections and a 30mg/day percocet regime that while helping back pain , keeps me in a perpetual state of interdose withdrawal. No one will Rx me a slow release pain med because of being on suboxone in the past. I never realized what a LOADED word that was. When you say SUBOXONE, you might as well say HEROIN! I’m tired of the battle. Living in pain with anhedonia, depression, and never feeling any pleasure is not living. Not sure how much longer i can go on like this. I never saw this coming. These medications have destroyed my life and I see no way out. I have a supply and have tried every amino acid imaginable, and have tried multiple methods to restore natural endorphins and dopamine but nothing has helped. Its sad that there is no professional that treats EDS (Endorphin Deficiency Syndrome), and Dopamine death. Desperate and hopeless…any suggestions to regain some quality of life would be much appreciated.

      I’m so sorry to hear the amino acids haven’t reduced your symptoms Fred. Have you tried large amounts of mucuna pruriens
      to increase dopamine? And have you tried exercising a few times a week, acupuncture, and deep tissue massage to increase endorphins?

        I hope this is not inappropriate to say but I highly recommend pleasuring yourself because it is the single natural remedy for increasing endorphins and serotonin and reducing pain, that has helped me most of everything I have tried and I feel like I have researched and tried almost everything now. I recommend doing so, as frequently as needed throughout the day and always at bedtime as it is also excellent for helping u fall asleep easier and feel relaxed. I apologize if this post offends anyone but it always bothers me that the one thing that helps me the most is never mentioned. I have taken myself off opiates 3 times and I suffered so much before I figured this out for myself.

    I’m struggling so bad with all these withdrawal symptoms. I feel like I can’t trust any doctor. I’m crying all the time. I don’t have a friend in the world who I would tell this to. I have to get some help with this. I don’t think I can do it without help. My brain is fried and my body isn’t much better. Damn, I wish I had never agreed to start taking opioid meds for pain. It made things so much worse. Why would I fall for that? Why would a doctor put, then leave me here?

I’m really hoping things get better in the future. It will likely take many years. I wish you the best of luck and stay strong through this.       I’m 22 years old, a year and a half ago was put on oc ir 15mg 5x a day, and morphine er 60mg 2x a day. About a month ago, found out I had tc (testicular cancer) I run my own business and am a full time student. I understand how hard it is, while they were figuring out what was going on with tc, I’ve been on 30mg oc ir 5x daily. I’m done, Friday, I quit morphine er completely. Never abused, never had any idea what they were doing to me. I lost my fiance, was with her 6 years, bc of this. May not seem long, but you can do it, exercise, I have a horrible back, but still do. I promise you can. No morphine 120mg daily for 5 days, no more than 30mg oc daily soon to be dropped, sweat out the toxins! Make endorphins, make serotonin, you can and will do it.

    Hey people.
    I’m in a buprenorphine withdrawal right now. I have done a very drawn out taper. I’m at day 6 after the last dose. The symptoms have been bearable. Mostly due to taking the right approach to this detox. Supplements and smoking weed has really helped.
    My sleeping pattern has been shot to bits. Using benzo’s drags out withdrawal symptoms. I know this from previous experience. Is there a natural remedy that does actually work?

      Always take the L tyrosine at least 45 min before a meal or it will not absorb/metabolize properly. Do not start the L tyrosine until the acute withdrawal stage diarrhea subsides and u feel strong enough to eat at least twice a day, typically day 4 or 5 for mild opiate use, day 6 or 7 for moderate opiate use and day 8 or 9 for strong opiate use, L tyrosine in any amount over 500mg will cause diarrhea, so I suggest taking every pill with a full dosing cup of liquid immodium, u can take up to 2000mg a day if needed however anything over 500mg can cause u to feel anxious, jacked up and jittery, so I suggest u carefully and slowly experiment to find a balance of mg and dosing times that work for u, I’ve found 500mg before breakfast and after dinner on an empty stomach with liquid immodium is perfect for me but if I wait till bedtime it’s too close to the morning dosee and I experience those negative side effects even tho I’m not exceeding the 1000mg per day, it can also make sleeping difficult. Once u find the right balance to increase your dopamine levels with the least side effects, it is exceptionally helpful for reducing depression and boosting energy level. I highly recommend it.

    Great Read! Thank you so much for taking the time to share this information with the world. I am 10months into my recovery using 70mg of Methadone, for the most part I feel stable, I can deal with the weight gain for now unless it becomes excessive. I needed to put on a few pounds from the absue my body went thru. I have purchased the Maca root(Start it tomorrow) My main issue is sweeting and being so hot. I only sweet from the neck up, my hair looks like I just got jumped out of the shower all the time. Its horrible. I also just purchased Black Cohosh for this issue but I am a little worried, the bottle warns that Women of childbhrearing age should not take it. I have a three year old. I dont want a baby right now but once off the methadone I would like to give my son a sibling. Any thoughts why the warning and if I should or should not take it? I am desperate for something to help with the hotness…. I find myself wanting to not take the methadone because of this, but I dont think i am strong enough just yet.

      When I was a counselor at a methadone clinic, some of the patients told me they purchased supplements for the sweating and other common side effects such as:

      Mitadone

      Nutridone

      Vitadone

      And as far as the black cohosh goes, I would ask your doctor if that is ok for you to take. Congrats on getting clean and I’m really proud of you Jenn. Check out these supplements I mentioned if you like. Some patients said they worked well for sweating and low energy and sugar cravings, so it might be worth looking into you.

      Methadone is a powerful medication and I saw it causing lots of side effects in patients, however, it enabled many people to get their lives back on track, so for that it’s awesome. I’m here to support you along the way if you have any more questions ok? I got your back!

    Hello,
    This is my second attempt at getting off of prescription pills. I lasted 15 days and was doing well with the use of gabapentin. The cravings were intense and the restless feeling/anxiety was also not good. I found myself thinking about several times a day even will working and excercising. Also at day 15 some real pain set in. I have real RA and fibromyalgia. I am feeling hopeless! I am trying again after going back and using for two weeks. I purchased and am using Vitamin C every two hours. I purchased a multivitamin/mineral, potassium, calcium with vitamin d and magnesium, b-12, ginseng complex, L-Dopa 15%, GABA, 5-HTP with B6, Passion flower, valerian root, and melatonin. All the suplements from your list on a different page. So I started yesterday and we shall see how it goes. One thing that is bothering me now and resulted in me going back is my pain and tiredness. I also had thyroid removed three months ago (levels checked and are fine). The all over pain from the fibro and the craving are a big problem for me. Is there more I can do? The every two hours of vitamin c and large amount of supplements is work trying but I’m nervous the pain and cravings will cause me to fail again. If I could be doing something more I am willing.

        Thank you for the reply, I am picking up DLPA Today. Also trying your supplement blend for energy if that doesn’t get better soon. This is true hell for everyone but a special kind for those with chronic pain. After 200 dollars on supplements I almost complained then realized I would drop that on pills easily. I want my life back. Thanks for your time. I’ll update…..
        One more question….I want to try Kratom for pain relief but I fear it. I took 8-9 10mg Oxycodone daily. I don’t want to trade one addiction for another but like I said if I ant get some pain relief I don’t know if I can be successful even with my best effort.

          And even though kratom can become addictive or at least daily use over time can facilitate a physiological dependence, at least kratom is legal, can be purchased in bulk, and is probably better for your body than pharmaceuticals since it is a natural plant. Though I agree it’s no fun to be dependent on any substance, natural or whatever…

          I could not find the new post button on mobile so this post would most benefit from my experience… fiest and foremost suboxone withdrawal is way worse than regular opuate withdrawal and lasts a hell of a lot longer… just want to say beyond thank you. I am a single mother of 8 yr old twin boys and a 5 class university pre-law student with a 3.93 gpa… I was on oxycodone for a very long time and then switched to subs to maintain and was on the for atleast a year but only a 2-4 mgs a day… buying them off the streets. I had no choice but to jump off at 2mg and immediately started taking 1500 mgs of the dlpa 3 times a day (which that stuff is beyond a godsend and I will continue to take it from now on even after I stop the others) along with I’m modicum as needed, 2 ginseng complex with royal jelly in the am, I was already on 1800 mgs of gabapentin for bipolar (which I am pretty sure the opiates caused or atleast brought to the surface) a hair skin nails (nature’s bounty brand at regular directed dosage of 3 per day) a 1 mgs tenex (like clonodine) twice a day (once in the am and once at night) and then 3 valerian root with passion flower in it at bed time with a 1mg xanax and I have felt no withdrawal whatsover… I know without these wonder vitamins I would be completely out of commission still… I am a week from jumping cold turkey and feel completely normal!!!! Thank u sooooooo much because I never would have made it this far without your expertise… I have tried in the past to quit and always fall back… not this time… I owe u my life

          And 1 5-htp (200 mg maximum strength) at bed time as well…. with the 5-htp if I take it during the day it gives me the jitters and restlessness but if I take it at bed time with the others it doesn’t… and i apologize for the typos my auto correct is also bipolar lol… the I’m modicum was supposed to be immodium… I take 4 upon waking and 2 with the other 2 dlpa doses… is it OK to use the dlpa as a long term supplement after the others are done or is it more of a short term regimen? Thank you again Matt.. u are truly my savior in this terrible cycle…

      Hemp oil is high in essential fatty acids EFAs), while this helps with depression and enhances mood after coming off drugs, using it to come off methadone withdrawal is like putting a band aid on a broken leg…in my opinion.

      I love EFAs in the treatment of addiction, though they have their place, which is for post-acute withdrawal symptoms, not acute phase. Many opiate users could benefit from a high-quality hemp oil or fish oil supplement, as they have many health benefits.

    Suppose one can only afford one product at a time for withdrawal. Where to start? I am still coming down by reducing how much hydro I take. Still many withdrawal symptoms get me down. What I am asking for is what to take in the early stages, then later, and finally what to take after the last pill has been taken. Too hard, Matt. Yes maybe the wrong question. Also cool cloudy weather really gets me down.
