opiate taper or cold turkey detox

While there are many different ways you can detox from opiates, the two features are whether or not you taper or do a cold-turkey opiate detox.

A cold-turkey opiate detox is when you stop taking opiates abruptly and go into withdrawal fast.

An opiate taper is when you slowly reduce your dosage at regular intervals over the span of time.

For instance, a man taking 100 mg of hydrocodone per day could taper off by adhering to the following taper schedule:

  • Week 1 – 80 mg
  • Week 2 – 70 mg
  • Week 3 – 60 mg
  • Week 4 – 50 mg
  • Week 5 – 40 mg
  • Week 6 – 30 mg
  • Week 7 – 25 mg
  • Week 8 – 20 mg
  • Week 9 – 15 mg
  • Week 10 – 10 mg
  • Week 12 – 5 mg
  • Week 14 – Jump off

Here is a video where I talk about the features, pros, and cons of cold-turkey vs tapering protocols, and I also provide tips for success for each.

Hello there. And thank you for all the info. More help than any dr gives for sure. My question is this… I’ve been on OxyContin (but script is filled with oxycodone hcl er)… for 14 YEARS…. Due to peripheral neuropathy due to chemotherapy. Although this does work on my nerve pain… I hate what it is doing to my body… and with laws changing in my state.. I hate my insurance company dictating what and how I can take these meds…. sooo I’m trying to take my life and control back…. I’ve tapered myself down to 30mg a day… 3x10mg. And have just cut out my 3rd dose this weekend…leaving me with 2- 10mg doses left…. with these being time released… I’d there any recommendations you have for these last two doses since they can’t be cut down? or is cold turkey the only way to finish up? Trying to get a little specific details on what to have handy being used to the extended release. Thanks again. I’m binge watching all I can. Thanks for the help. Have a blessed day.
