In this article, I’m going to teach you how to get off Percocet at home. I used to be severely addicted to Percocet while I worked as a cook at a fast-paced restaurant in New York. The Percocet gave me unlimited energy and enthusiasm at work. Since I didn’t have a Percocet prescription, I had to buy Percocet from a drug dealer. There were times where either I didn’t have money to buy Percocet, or my dealer had run out.
During these situations, I had to get off Percocet at home.
After going through several home-based Percocet withdrawals, I started to learn what worked and what didn’t. Eventually, I got clean and went on to become a Substance Abuse Counselor at an Opiate Treatment Program (OTP), where I helped many individuals recover from Percocet addiction.
Over the past year, I’ve made it my life’s purpose and mission to research and write about all of the most powerful and effective strategies for getting off Percocet and other opioid drugs.
This natural at-home detox plan for coming off Percocet is gentle, safe, inexpensive and POWERFUL.
If you follow these simple steps exactly as I’ve outlined, you should be well on your way to getting off Percocet with ease…
Step 1: Start Tapering Off Percocet
Coming off Percocet “cold-turkey” is a huge system shock to your body. After using Percocet daily for a period of time, your body becomes physiologically dependent on Percocet. This doesn’t necessarily mean you are “addicted” (though you might be), it just means that your body now requires Percocet every day to prevent you from going into Percocet withdrawal.
The abrupt cessation of Percocet after a tolerance and dependence have been established leads to a variety of horrific physical and mental withdrawal symptoms.
Some of the most common Percocet withdrawal symptoms are:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Insomnia
- Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Gastrointestinal (GI) distress
- Diarrhea
- Hot and cold flashes
- Sore and aching muscles and limbs
Note: The most effective natural strategy for preventing these withdrawal symptoms is to start tapering off Percocet. Tapering refers to systematically lowering your Percocet dosage over a period of time. The single most important thing you can do to decrease the severity of withdrawal symptoms is to taper off Percocet. This approach is preferred to a “cold-turkey” withdrawal. Tapering off Percocet enables your body to gently ease off the medication over a span of weeks or months.
Now, let’s go over a few Tapering 101 basics:
- Slow tapers are easier on your body than fast tapers (the slower you go, the less withdrawal symptoms you experience).
- Everyone is biochemically unique (what works for one person won’t necessarily work for everyone).
- Take only as much Percocet as is necessary to prevent you from going into withdrawal (you’re not trying to get high or feel good, only to keep from getting sick).
- It takes serious discipline to adhere to a tapering protocol (giving your pills to someone you can trust and having them only give you the dosage on your taper schedule is highly recommended).
- “The lower you go, the slower you go” (it might be easy to taper quickly from 100 mg to 30 mg of oxycodone, however, it’s better to slow it down towards the end of the taper because it will be less of a shock to your body).
Note: Since everyone reading this article is going to have varying levels of addiction severity and their own unique biochemical makeup, there is no way I can outline a “one size fits all” taper plan. However, I will provide you with some detailed examples so you can get a good understanding of how to implement a Percocet taper plan into your own life.
Example #1: Garrett the Surfer
Garrett is a surfer that started taking Percocet after he injured his back performing a technical maneuver on a fast wave. His doctor prescribed him to take 5 mg Percocet pills, 4 times per day. Mike found that the Percocet gave him more than just pain relief. The medication also gave him energy, confidence, happiness, and the feeling that he could do anything he wanted in the world.
He quickly started taking more Percocet than was prescribed, and within three months Garrett was purchasing illegal Percocet off the street, and taking an average dosage of 100 mg per day.
If I had to come up with a Percocet taper plan for Garrett, it might look like this:
- Week 1: Take 80 mg of Percocet per day
- Week 2: Take 60 mg of Percocet per day
- Week 3: Take 50 mg of Percocet per day
- Week 4: Take 40 mg of Percocet per day
- Week 5: Take 30 mg of Percocet per day
- Week 6: Take 20 mg of Percocet per day
- Week 7: Take 15 mg of Percocet per day
- Week 8: Take 10 mg of Percocet per day
- Week 9: Take 5 mg of Percocet per day
- Week 10: Come off Percocet completely
Example #2: Luke the Firefighter
Luke started working as a firefighter a few years after he graduated from high school, following in the footsteps of his father and two older brothers. After 10 years on the job, he began to have issues with his right knee. He finally had knee surgery, and his doctor placed him on 30 mg of Percocet per day. Two weeks after the surgery, Luke was in a car crash and severely injured his neck and back. His doctor upped the Percocet dosage to 60 mg per day.
After taking 60 mg of Percocet every day for six months, the doctor told Luke he was taking him off the medication because his injuries were healed. The first day Luke went without pills he didn’t know why he felt so bad. He had a runny nose, teary eyes, and he had anxiety, fatigue and stomach discomfort all day long. Luke called a friend, and they told him he was going through Percocet withdrawal.
If I had to come up with a Percocet taper plan for Luke, it might look like this:
- Days 1-10: Take 50 mg of Percocet per day
- Days 11-20: Take 40 mg of Percocet per day
- Days 21-30: Take 30 mg of Percocet per day
- Days 31-40: Take 20 mg of Percocet per day
- Days 41-50: Take 15 mg of Percocet per day
- Days 51-60: Take 10 mg of Percocet per day
- Days 61-80: Take 5 mg of Percocet per day
- Day 81: Come off Percocet completely
Note: If you don’t have the time, money, access to Percocet or discipline, you might have to come off Percocet cold-turkey. If you can’t taper off Percocet, don’t worry…you can still get off Percocet without severe withdrawal symptoms. I’m going to provide you with some great tips for getting off Percocet cold-turkey (including medications) towards the end of the article.
Step 2: Start Exercising
All drugs mimic different neurotransmitters in the brain, and opiates specifically mimic endorphins, our natural painkillers (natural morphine). After taking Percocet for a period of time, the brain gets used to this artificially-induced, massive supply of endorphins. Getting off Percocet can be difficult because even though you’re creating less drug-induced endorphins, your body doesn’t supply you with the rest. This can lead to a massive endorphin deficiency, which makes you more susceptible to physical and emotional pain.
When people ask me how to get off Percocet at home, I always encourage them to exercise as part of their overall taper wellness plan. Swimming, jogging, walking, weight training and other forms of exercise can help your body produce endorphins within minutes.
Exercise can help you get off Percocet at home because it:
- Improves mood
- Boosts endorphins (natural painkillers)
- Improves sleep
- Reduces pain (both physical and emotional)
- Promotes well-being
- Reverses anxiety
- Reverses depression
- Increases energy
- Improves physique
- Boosts confidence
Step 3: Start Eating a High Amino Acid Diet
When people ask me how to get off Percocet at home, I always tell them about the endorphin-boosting and mood-enhancing effects of protein. Protein is made up of amino acids. These amino acids are directly responsible for the healthy production of neurotransmitters. Eating a diet rich in high-quality protein foods can help you produce endorphins and other mood-enhancing chemicals in the brain.
While you’re getting off Percocet at home, it can be very beneficial to consume at least 20-30 grams of protein three times per day. I’ve been clean from Percocet and all other opiates for over three years now, and I still eat plenty of quality proteins on a daily basis.
The following nutritional guidelines can help get off Percocet at home:
- Eat plenty of turkey, chicken, fish, beef, cottage cheese and other quality proteins (free-range, organic and wild-caught are best).
- Drink plenty of water (half your body weight in ounces per day).
- Consume lots of fresh fruits, veggies, and healthy fats.
- Eliminate or decrease sugar, processed foods, and refined carbohydrates.
- Eliminate or decrease caffeine and alcohol.
- Focus mostly on organic whole foods.
Step 4: Purchase an Opiate Withdrawal Supplement
Opiate Withdrawal Supplements are specifically designed to help people get off Percocet and other opiates. They contain a synergistic blend of herbs, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that have been shown to be effective at reducing symptoms due to getting off Percocet and other opioid drugs. If you taper, exercise, eat a high amino acid diet and take a high-quality Opiate Withdrawal Supplement, these mega-strategies combined may help you get off Percocet at home with ease.
The best time to start taking the Opiate Withdrawal Supplement is right when you reach your personal “threshold” on the Percocet taper schedule. The threshold is the point at which you start to feel symptoms. For some people, this will be around 30 mg, others will feel fine until they reach 20 mg or lower.
Note: If you are going to skip the Percocet taper and do a cold-turkey withdrawal, you’ll want to start taking the Opiate Withdrawal Supplement at least seven days before you come off Percocet completely. You’ll also want to continue taking it for at least three weeks after you come off Percocet.
If you can afford it, I also highly recommend taking this awesome supplement, because the benefits are just too good to pass up.
Step 5: Take Time Off
If you really want to know how to get off Percocet at home, I encourage you to take time off from ALL responsibilities. When planning your detox from Percocet, try your absolute best to get a week off work, taking care of kids, school, or whatever responsibilities you have. At the bare minimum, make sure you schedule 3-4 days of “alone time” for getting off Percocet at home.
I understand this is not always possible. Just do your best to eliminate as much as you can from your day to day life. The less you have to do…the better. The methods I teach you in this article will eliminate the most severe withdrawal symptoms, so it’s possible to continue with your day-to-day life while getting off Percocet at home (if you’ve tapered), but I don’t recommend it. A relaxing, stress-free and quiet environment will help you adjust to coming off Percocet.
Step 6: Make a Percocet Withdrawal Shopping List
Before I knew how to get off Percocet at home like a pro, I made the mistake of being unprepared. The difference between a severe Percocet withdrawal and a mild one is “planning”. A few days before you get off Percocet at home, you’ll need to go shopping for some Percocet withdrawal remedies.
The following list of items can help to reduce symptoms while you’re getting off Percocet at home:
- Water – Maintains hydration
- Gatorade – Replenishes electrolytes
- Peppermint tea – Eases nausea
- Ginger ale – Relieves stomach pain
- Imodium AD – Stops diarrhea and stomach cramping
- Advil – Relieves pain
- Icy Hot – Soothes aching and restless limbs
- Dark Chocolate – Produces endorphins and other “feel good” chemicals
- Heating pad – Eases pain
- Epsom salt – Add to hot baths to relax nervous system
- Whey protein powder – Supplies amino acids that improve mood
- Apple juice – Use as base for protein shakes
- Bananas – Contain potassium to help relieve RLS
- Berries and other fruit – Quick energy
- Healthy food to cook – Proteins, veggies, healthy fats and carbs
- Saltine crackers – Easy to digest for quick energy
- Blindfold – Helps you sleep
Step 7: Complete your Percocet Withdrawal at Home
Now that you’ve tapered, started taking your Opiate Withdrawal Supplement, got time off from responsibilities and gone shopping, you’re finally ready to get off Percocet at home. Typically, the first day of Percocet withdrawal is the easiest, the second day gets harder, and days three and four are the worst.
However, that being said, if you’ve done a good job tapering and are taking the Opiate Withdrawal Supplement, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.
Regardless of whether you’ve taken these steps or not, the following schedule should help you get off Percocet at home easier:
- 7:00 am: Wake up and take your Opiate Withdrawal Supplement.
- 7:30 am: Go for a walk, jog or swim. Exercise stimulates the production of endorphins, which are your natural painkillers. This natural morphine eases Percocet withdrawal symptoms quickly and effectively. I know the last thing you probably feel like doing during withdrawal is exercising, but let me tell you, it’s the absolute best natural remedy there is.
- 8:00 am: Drink a glass of water or Gatorade. Eat breakfast. Have something like a fruit smoothie with whey protein powder or a breakfast sandwich. Eat a big piece of dark chocolate.
- 9:00 am: Take a long, hot bath with two cups of Epsom salt. Taking a hot bath during opiate withdrawal soothes aching muscles and limbs, relieves anxiety and promotes relaxation. Adding Epsom salt helps you calm the nervous system even more, while also stimulating the production of ATP and serotonin, improving the absorption of nutrients, and flushing toxins.
- 10:00 am: Put on some extremely comfortable clothes, lay down on the couch and watch either a comedy or an inspirational movie. This will take your mind off the withdrawal and get you into a positive mindset.
- 12:00 pm: Eat lunch. Try to eat something with fish, turkey, beef or chicken if you can stomach it. The amino acids in the protein will help bolster mood-enhancing chemicals in your brain. A sample lunch would be grilled chicken, rice, and steamed veggies. Eat a big piece of dark chocolate.
- 1:00 pm: Watch another movie (comedy or inspirational).
- 3:00 pm: Take a long and hot regular bath.
- 4:00 pm: Drink a big glass of water. Eat a snack if you’re hungry.
- 4:30 pm: Watch an inspirational movie.
- 6:30 pm: Go for a long walk, jog or swim.
- 7:30 pm: Drink a glass of Gatorade and take a hot bath. Drink a glass of water after your bath.
- 8:30 pm: Eat dinner. Some good examples are fish tacos or a turkey burger. Eat a big piece of dark chocolate. 30 minutes after dinner drink a cup of peppermint or chamomile tea.
- 9:00 pm: Turn off all the lights in the house. Light some candles and listen to relaxing music. You want to avoid bright lights, the TV, computer, and any other electrical devices after 9 pm. This is when your brain starts producing melatonin to help you fall asleep. Staring at the computer or other lights tricks your brain into thinking it’s still daytime, and this interferes with the production of sleep-inducing melatonin.
- 9:30 pm: Start writing in a journal. Write about all of the things you are going to do with your life once you complete your Percocet withdrawal.
- 10:00 pm: Start reading a self-help book by candlelight and go to bed as soon as you get sleepy. Make sure to get to bed before 12:00 am. Also make sure the room you sleep in is cool, quiet and dark. If you don’t get good sleep then don’t worry, lack of sleep won’t kill you.
- 10:30 pm: Before bed on an empty stomach, take your Opiate Withdrawal Supplement.
Note: This is just a sample of what a day of a planned Percocet withdrawal at home could look like. You can switch it up and adjust things as you see fit. Make sure to drink plenty of liquids throughout the day. Avoid alcohol, coffee and energy drinks at all costs!!!
* If the food I mentioned doesn’t sound good then don’t worry…simply eat what sounds good to your body. If you have any diarrhea take Imodium AD. If you have aching muscles and limbs take Advil and rub Icy Hot on the problem areas.
* Don’t Google anything about Percocet withdrawal! Stay out of the forums! Most of the people on forums aren’t professionals and give horrible advice. I’ve cringed after reading several of the things people on these sites have recommended. Sometimes there is good information, but usually, this is not the case.
Medications for Getting Off Percocet at Home
If you haven’t been able to taper and are coming off Percocet “cold-turkey,” the strategies I’ve provided you with will still help considerably. However, that being said, if you are coming off a severe Percocet addiction, you may wish to consider using medications to ease withdrawal symptoms.
The following medications can be used to ease Percocet withdrawal symptoms:
- Clonidine – A blood pressure medication that can reduce anxiety, slow heart rate and improve sleep.
- Benzodiazepines – Anti-anxiety drugs such as Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Klonopin, Librium etc.
- Gabapentin – A medication for nerve pain that relieves Percocet withdrawal symptoms.
- Tramadol – A synthetic, mild painkiller that binds to opioid receptors and ameliorates withdrawal syndrome.
Step 8: Stay Clean!
If you follow the first seven steps getting off Percocet at home can be easy. I know it’s possible because I’ve done it! The real challenge is staying clean. You are going to feel like using in the next few weeks or months. Don’t give in! Continue taking your Opiate Withdrawal Supplement, exercising, and eating healthily.
Continue writing in your journal and reading your self-help book. Start another book as soon as you finish the first one. Feeding your mind is essential for developing a healthy recovery free of addiction. If you’ve been purchasing Percocet illegally then I recommend deleting your dealer’s phone number. It would also be wise to change your number.
If you’ve been getting them from a doctor you should probably tell them the truth about your situation. I realize many people also use Percocet for pain as it’s intended. There are many natural pain relief methods you can utilize in place of narcotics.
Learning how to live life without Percocet can be difficult.
We get so used to reaching for pills to give us energy and happiness. The next few months after getting off Percocet at home will test you. The first 90 days after getting clean is when 90% of people relapse. Don’t let it happen to you!
I’ve been clean for three years now, and I feel better than I have in my entire life at the age of 35. It took me about six months to really feel amazing after I got clean, so I encourage you to be patient. It takes the body some time to recover from all the brain chemistry imbalances that Percocet addiction created or exacerbated.

This page is a answer to prayer. I have been on Percocet for six years and when I was wanting to start tapering I began having several kidney stones. I am almost past that and ready to begin this journey. Just wanted to say thank you. I am going to use your schedule and knowing I have a plan I really think I can do this and be okay. I have chronic pancreatitis and I know there will be times I have no choice but to take something. My doctor has told me that if that happens I could take medicine for a few days and I would have no withdrawals. I have taken meds so long I truly think they are not working.
Again thank you so much. I’ll come back in a few weeks with a victory report 😀

I want to get off my pain contract. I have lowered my script a few times but every time I do my husband gets mad because we share my script. I’ve lied told him said the dr did it every time. But I just want to be done an he makes it very hard because there always in the house. He knows when my appts are and when I get a refill. But I’ve lowered myself down to 2 10mg a day but still crave the energy so when I refill I can’t help myself and take more.
Fred
Also I forgot to mention that clam support and DL Phenylalanine is my choice of meds to help out along with a mild work out program, of course after the 4th or 5th day. I’m really freaked out about day 2,3,4 I’m reading there the worse.
Fred
Well on the forth of this month I have made it so I can use the next 7 days to get off my Opiate addiction. I’m a heavy user roughly 240 mg per day taking 8-9 pills 15 mg. every 8 hours. This has messed up head I have severe anxiety attcks and depression kicks bad as well. I’m so done here, I have no life within anymore. I need to do something. I have checked to see where I can but there’s really no help for somebody that’s on access. I believe I have put together a good withdrawal plan. Please if anybody has anything they can add to help it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

This is the hardest thing you won’t be able to get of percs if you don’t want to yet , but if you really want to be done with them and youve had enough then you will be able to …The mind is a very powerful thing you can do anything you set your mind to .

This is an amazing site! You are all very courageous to take this on and I hope when I begin I will be as brave. I have suffered with disabling osteoarthritis since 2010 when my physician trailed other remedies before prescribing 30mg of Percocet a day. I am having a trial of a special procedure to ,hopefully, get my pain below a 5. If it works I will start decreasing my daily dose. Matt can you recommend a slow dosage decrease for me? Unlike some others I really hate how this drug makes me feel.
With your consent I will pray for all of you as well as myself and of course Matt.?

Great information here. Thank you. Been tapering off of Percocet, morphin, oxicotin and somas for about 6 months now. Been taking these for the past 8 years without missing a dose. All of which were prescribed and I’ve never abused. This all started due to a lower back fusion. Ive managed to get down to using only two percocet 10mg per day. I can’t seem to break past these last two pills for some reason. I have chronic backpain but I don’t want to use that as an excuse to keep taking these. Its destroying my life. I wish everyone on here success.

Matt, my girlfriend is addicted to percocet and has recently decided she is done with them. We came up with a strategy to wean her off but she is used to taking several a day (10+ of 10/325) for roughly 9 or so years now. Her problem was the reason for many of our fights and she decided she was done, and wanted to save our relationship. We are now on day 2, and it was a rough one, we brought her down to 6 possibly 8 a day. Do you have any advice on how I can be supportive but also make sure she feels as though she can trust me especially on rough days? I want to be there for her because I know this is hard but I also don’t want to be too involved if its only going to push her away or make her feel I am keeping tabs on her. She gave me her pills to monitor how many she is taking, but I am also going out of town for about a week soon and won’t be able to monitor her. Any advice for me would be wonderful, this isn’t just a battle for her, but me as well.
Kev
Levi. I’ve been on these a very long time. Everyone is different but for me I’d say your drop in pills to begin with was to much to soon. If she’s stuggling obviously her body wants more. For me I’d say start by reducing it by halves. I reduce mine by 1/2 a pill per 7 days. The method is slower but its not as painful regarding withdrawals. Two pill drop to start is huge. I’m no expert by any means but I’m going through this as we speak. Yes its the hardest thing ever and it hurts physically and emotionally. Best of luck! She can do this. She will need you by her side. Support is critical

I am going on vacation on Saturday and then I am coming back and am going to quit this stuff. I am going to taper off as recommended. I never thought it would get this bad. I have never taken more than prescribed but suddenly after about 3 and a half years I just feel like shit all the time. The meds aren’t working because of tolerance I’m sure and even though my pain doc would give me more I just don’t want it. I am not sure how I will manage the chronic pain I am taking the stuff for but now that has become secondary to the emotional pain I am experiencing being on this stuff. I am taking 40mg a day and so I hope this will all be over in about a month. Thanks
Matt Finch
Mel I too suffered from chronic pain, for three years in fact. I am now pain-free, and one of the books that really helped was Think Away Your Pain.
Josh
I am going to try this method. I really want to get back to being myself! Addicted for at least 4 years maybe longer. Pray for me! This is by far the most helpful article I’ve read I’m glad I came across it. I have a girlfriend who I recently started dating and have not told her about my addiction. I hope she is willing to be here for me during my recovery.
Matt Finch
I really hope she is willing to support you during your time of need too, despite not telling her about your secret. Coming up with a plan then setting a date to start is the first step, so good for you! And I always think honesty is the best policy. I commend you Josh!

I am on day 2 i have also been taking percocet for a long time i would say 6 years now i am at the point where mentally i hate this drug i want to be happy and healthy the normal way and i know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I have gotten off these before and it felt amazing i relapsed after i had surgery . I just want to tell you day 5 is an amazing accomplishment you are in the middle of the worst of it but do not turn back now. I have children too and i always think its so unfair to them for me to be sick for however many days it takes and crabby and irritabble but you are choosing to give them a life with a happy healthy mother and they deserve that as do you… the tips above in this article are great… take some ibruprofen or advil or exedrine and then a hot shower put on some clean clothes something comfortable and lay down if u can. Exercise to does help its hard to want to get up and move but it definitely helps with leg cramps..

Do you think that taking melatonin for sleep would help? I find it’s hard to sleep when coming off percocet.

This article was so helpful to me! It answered a lot of questions I had and even explained some things I didn’t know about. I have been on Percocet for 15 years, all of that being provided by pain management doctors. I’m 29 and wanted my life to be different and I’ve wanted to quit for a few years but always had a script I could reach for. This time I canceled my appointment just so I’d have to do it. I’ve officially been narcotic free for a week and I’m learning different ways to manage my pain. Thank you so much!

Hi, I’ve been having I believe Percocet with drawls for about a week now. On and off throughout the day I was taking 2a day. My stomach feels really discomfort, I get really nauseous, I’ve had anxiety issues past few days my chest will have an uncomfortable feeling like a pressure m. My stomach feels like it’s in knots at times and like something is eating at my tummy from the inside and my sinuses have been activated I believe all for not having Percocet in like a week? Any advice I go to my dr’s actually tomorrow afternoon I want to feel normal again I haven’t felt like myself lately specially my stomach

Hi I’m currently taking 15mg every 8 hours. Can you help me come up with a taper schedule that will help minimize the PAWS? I really want to stop and spoke to my doctor but I have been sick before and I am afraid of ever going through it again.

I am a 44 yr old mother of 2 active teenagers. Had open heart surgery and perscribed hydros for 9 months for pain. After that I have been buying anything I can get off the street. Now I’m up to 15, 10mg percocets a day. 100.00 day habit. I am about out and scared to death!!! I have experienced withdraws twice only to find more drugs on the 3rd day. I couldn’t stand it! Overwhelming sadness, stomach cramping, vomiting, diareahh. I don’t know what to do. My family needs me. I feel like a horrible person! I am scared of these withdraws! Please help!
