Do you feel a strong “force” in your gut telling you that you need to get off opioids once and for all? Some opioid-dependent individuals never feel the need or desire to quit.
However, in my experience, it seems like the vast majority of people on opioids eventually feel a strong intuition, an “inner-knowing,” that they need to get off the drugs.
For some, this feeling comes very fast… maybe within as little as a few weeks of being on daily opioids.
For others, it takes several months on opioids before they feel the strong inner-knowing telling them “it’s time to quit.”
And for others still, it could be years before they experience this “shift” in their values, goals, and beliefs.
I was able to use opioids recreationally for 10 years… without ever becoming addicted or even close to it.
But that all changed once I had a steady supply of pills for the first time ever.
Within 2 months of having multiple dealers and daily access to pills, I was up to 100 mg a day of OxyContin or the equivalent with other pills, and I went through a horrific withdrawal when the dealers all ran out at the exact same time.
That was my moment where I knew I had to end the addiction.
It took me several years after that moment to finally quit for good, but during that entire timeline, I still felt this inner-knowing and intuition that I was supposed to quit.
Let’s go into more detail about this inner-knowing that we’re supposed to be opioid-free…
The “Knowing”
When an opioid-dependent individual first gets that gut feeling telling them to “quit opioids once and for all,” everything changes.
By now the benefits of using opioids have likely decreased significantly, and the negative consequences have almost certainly increased to scary levels.
It happens for different reasons and at different times for different people, but I’ve found that nearly every person taking opioids daily eventually has this experience.
I call it “The Knowing.”
While I was using opiates recreationally a few days a month for those 10 years straight, I never once had a gut feeling that I needed to stop.
And why would I?
I only received lots of benefits like Euphoria, Happiness, Confidence, and Energy!!!
And there were no significant negative consequences.
I spent less than $100 per month, didn’t get arrested, didn’t get hangovers, didn’t get addicted, or anything else bad.
But after using a ton of opiates daily for 2 months straight when I was 32, the “Age of Innocent Recreational Use” was over, and I was now severely addicted, and just beginning the “Biggest Battle of My Life.”
Where Does The Knowing Come From?
I’ve had that intuition, that “Knowing” many other times in life, in many other situations other than opioid addiction. Where does that Knowing come from?
Is it from my Unconscious Mind?
The Collective Unconscious?
God?
My Superconscious Mind or Higher Self?
Some benevolent, loving, intelligent force was sending signals to my gut, brain, and heart, telling me I needed to overcome this addiction to have a good life and live up to my full potential.
Throughout my life, I’ve received these messages not as words, but as a Knowing or a Feeling, a general intuition of what I’m supposed to do.
Sometimes it’s quiet and a very small feeling, but other times it’s loud and strong.
With drug addiction, the message was so loud, so strong, so forceful, and so obvious that it was a full-blown KNOWING.
I knew I was supposed to quit.
Our Purpose
I believe that our Souls come to earth in physical bodies (humans) to learn lessons, overcome adversity, grow, love, help others, and create karma.
I have no way of proving this, but the book Journey of Souls was scientific enough for a skeptic like me to believe in the concept.
The Inner-Knowings and Intuitions are a guiding force in my life.
I think with my brain and feel with my heart, but usually, I make big decisions based on my Intuition, which I believe comes from a Spiritual Force.
God, The Universe, The Higher Self, The Unconscious/Superconscious Mind, and The Collective Unconscious are all possible sources of these Knowings we receive if we’re listening.
Have You Experienced This?
Have you had your Knowing Moment yet?
That moment where you had a strong urge to quit opioids?
Have there been other moments in your life where you felt a Knowing that you were supposed to do something or not do something?
Feel warmly encouraged to share any of your thoughts in the comment box below, as well as any questions you may have. Take care!

My Knowing came the way I figurwd it would… I always told loved ones who pressured me off that if I were ready I would act on it, and I knew I was not ready. For years I stayed “not ready.” Then one evening after an unexpected and truly amazing spiritual experience, I fell asleep feeling VERY able… Yet wondered if the conviction would stick overnite… Sure enough thr next day on my walk to the clinic I KNEW it was time to start my taper. I had 100% surety no matter the pain of withdrawal i somehow developed a tolerance level i did not possess 48hrs prior.
It was spiritual for me. I cannot say with certainty what triggered it, but I am full of gratitude and hope for my future that when its time for my next level of knowing it will come.
