Hey! This is Matt with an opiate recovery mastery training video. This topic is one of my absolute favorites. It’s on “The 3 Types of Fear” and how to overcome them.
I just love talking about this type of stuff.
It’s so subconscious that we don’t even realize it.
And it’s so important and once you really master this, there’s really nothing that can hold you back in life once you master your fears.
Assumption of Pain
So with all these fears is an assumption of pain. The three main fears are Fear of Loss, Fear of the Process, and Fear of the Outcome.
And I’m going to get deeper into each of these but first, we need to talk about the differences of fear.
Physical Threat Fear
So I am not talking about physical fear which is actually like for instance when you’re running from a saber-toothed tiger or when you hear someone break into your home.
These types are like say you’re about to get running to buy a car and you see it coming at you.
Those are all types of physical threat fear. What I’m talking about in this video is nonphysical threat fear which is the most common type of fear.
Nonphysical Threat Fears
And basically, it’s just simply that management of the mind. And I’m going to teach you not only in this video but in the writing assignment below how to really unlock and uncover some subconscious or conscious fears that you have and how to break through them.
So again underneath all three of these fears is some type of assumption of pain.
Remember in a previous video I talked about how humans do everything to either avoid pain or gain pleasure and will do so much more to avoid pain than will do to gain pleasure.
So again beneath all three of these fears, there’s some assumption of pain.
There’s going to be pain involved, our natural default mechanism is to avoid pain.
So we’ll do all this stuff to avoid pain.
So a lot of times if we have one two or even all three of these fears which are going to equal pain. We won’t even start the process. So we’re going to get into this right now.
1. Fear of Loss
So number one is the fear of loss. Say for instance with opioid addiction recovery, one thing that could be holding you back is a fear of the loss of benefits that you could be losing.
So for some people, they could be losing the pain relief benefits.
For me, I used to get a lot of anxiety relief and a lot of energy from that. I was afraid of losing my calm mindset, I was afraid of losing my happiness, my confidence, I was afraid of losing that energy because I didn’t feel comfortable in my own skin.
So try to think about and then there’s a writing assignment beneath that’ll help you unlock this.
As I’m talking about this just try and think about if anything that is you fearing of losing?
What could you possibly be losing?
The way to overcome this fear, the solution is to think about everything that you’ll gain.
And not only think about it but write out literally everything that you could possibly gain all the wonderful benefits and all the different areas of your life that you’ll gain.
And so focus on what you’re going to gain and not what you’re going to lose.
That’s the way to overcome the fear of loss.
2. Fear of the Process
Number two is the fear of the process. Oftentimes there’s either at least one step if not more steps of a certain process that we either think will be too hard, too difficult, we won’t be able to do it or it’s just going to be very, very painful.
So for me, the biggest thing was the fear of the acute withdrawal.
You know I thought it was just going to be so hard and also the post-acute withdrawal where your symptoms last for weeks to months.
I didn’t think I was going to be able to get through that because, in the past, I had failed.
I had either set a date and not gone through with all the days that acute detox or I did successfully get past that but down the line, the post-acute withdrawal was just way too hard.
So if you’re fearing one step or more of this process and this is a pretty long process of the opioid addiction recovery that can lead to you getting stuck and not moving forward and not making progress towards your goal of opioid addiction recovery and opiate recovery mastery.
So the solution to overcome the fear of this process chain is to welcome the process, honor the process, know that it’s going to be a challenge and welcome the challenge.
Really just know like okay like there’s probably going to be some things that that might be hard.
Hey, you know I’ll prepare for the worst but hope for the best.
So you really just have to reframe it as I don’t care if there’s something that seems hard or like it’s going to be a challenge.
You know what who cares.
Welcome the process, welcome the challenge, respect and honor this process and that’s the way to overcome the fear of the process.
This is just really picked apart what your main steps of the process are and what you’re going to do to overcome those and to make those easier.
3. Fear of the Outcome
And the third fear is fear the outcome. Perhaps you have a fear that what if you do all this stuff, what if you’ve purchased this program and what if you go out and purchase some good supplements and maybe you get your doctor to prescribe you some great medications and you take some time off work, and what if you do like you plan out this great home detox and what if you just can’t do it.
And you’ve maybe you’ve told your family, or told your significant other or something that you’re going to do it and maybe you’re afraid, you’re fearful that the outcomes not going to be what you want.
Maybe you’re afraid that you’re not going to be able to get through the acute withdrawal, maybe you’re afraid that although you do get through the acute withdrawal months down.
Weeks or months or maybe longer down the line. you end up getting back on opiates.
So your fear of the outcome that you’re not going to be able to do this long-term.
And so the solution to this type of fear is to personal fulfillment, simply to trying regardless of the outcome.
Okay so it takes a lot of courage and it takes a lot of personal responsibility and self-discipline and strength and heart to for anybody to come off opioids and to you know to get off these drugs and then try to live a life of recovery.
So who cares if you fail the first time, it doesn’t matter.
You can try again.
Do not fear the outcome because I could regardless you’re a success even if you try.
Because there’s a lot of people I’m telling you right now there’s a lot of people that never even try they get stuck on drugs and they don’t even try to quit or they’ll just switch from one drug the other, that’s what I did for years and years and years over a decade in fact.
I just switched drugs, I went from marijuana to alcohol to benzodiazepines to pretty much any drug I could get my hand on to opioids.
You know I just didn’t want to be without substances in me.
I had a fear of the outcome that if I got off everything then I would be a mess.
And that just wasn’t true that was just my own fear because you know didn’t take long for me at all to feel totally amazing.
I felt so good after I got off opioids.
The key was to take the right supplements, exercise, focus on eating healthfully and really focus on changing my mindset and personal growth and connecting with spirituality.
So don’t fear the outcome.
Really you just need to link personal fulfillment and perhaps even contribution.
Oftentimes fear the outcome comes down to me, me, me, me, me, me.
We’re thinking about ourselves too much.
So the way to get around that is to think about other people.
You know think about whose life, who need you to be bringing your best right now, who needs you to be doing this, think about the other people in your life and how it will positively impact them for you to get off opioids and live your best life.
And even if you don’t succeed the first the second time, it doesn’t matter.
You’re going to be a success just simply for trying.
You going to be living your truth, you’re going to be operating from your integrity and your values and you’re not going to be stuck, you’re not going to be at a standpoint in the cage, fear of going forward just because of these fears you know.
F.E.A.R. = Face Everything and Rise
Face everything and rise. That’s what I think sting fear stands for it’s a chance for us to grow.
And really everything worthwhile in life is on the other side of fear whether you’re going after, whether you want to date somebody and you think it’s the person that could be the one for you or whether you want to go get that, start that business or maybe you’re applying for your dream job.
All those things are on the other side of fear and so is opioid recovery.
You know to live a life free of addiction from these drugs, they’re great in the beginning but let’s face it opioids are not that great after a while.
After a couple of weeks you get a big tolerance and after a couple of months, man, they just do not do the same stuff as they did in the beginning.
So they’re really great for short-term pain relief but as far as you know a daily drug to take for the rest of your lives, they’re not that effective.
So face everything and rise.
Rise to the challenge, raise up.
Writing Exercise
And here’s your writing assignment which is below. You can either write this in your journal or I’ve also created a PDF worksheet that you can print out.
If that’s how you’re doing this program either way.
Number one you’re going to write out any fears of loss that you might be having.
And then you’re going to write out what you’ll gain from quitting opioids.
So really trying to shift your focus to all the benefits you’re going to gain rather than that fear of loss what you could be losing.
And then number two is you’re going to write out any steps of the process that you fear and how you can welcome the challenge.
So maybe you’re a fearing the acute detox, maybe you’re fearing the post-acute withdrawal, maybe you’re fearing losing the pain relief benefits, maybe you’re fearing coming clean with your loved ones that you’ve been hiding this from, I’m not sure there’s all sorts of different steps of the process.
Maybe your comfortable right now in life and the process of change is just scaring the crap out of you.
So write those out and then really focus on how you can reframe your mindset to welcome this challenge.
There’s going to be another training on that.
That’s all about welcoming the challenge of opioid addiction recovery.
It’s a total mindset shift that helps you focus on using this off.
This is not a pain in but nothing to curse or condemn or wish that didn’t happen but really reframing it as an opportunity to grow.
I turned this my biggest life challenge which was opioid addiction.
I turned it into my biggest opportunity for growth and transformation and helping others and making a living doing what I love and teaching others.
So you can really reframe this as you can make this fun.
Number three is you write out any fear of the outcome you may have and then how you can link personal fulfillment and perhaps even contribution to the process.
