best movies and youtube videos to watch during opiate withdrawal

When going through opiate withdrawal at home, the best thing you can do to reduce the severity of physical and mental withdrawal symptoms is to take powerful opiate withdrawal remedies.

The next best thing you can do is take your mind off the withdrawal.

How do you do that?

My favorite way to do this is watching movies and YouTube videos.

We Feel What We Focus On

The act of watching things on TV or a computer causes you to focus on what you’re seeing and hearing, and this focus directs your attention away from yourself and your life.

Specifically, it helps you to “forget” about what you’re going through.

Of course you won’t completely forget that you’re detoxing from opiates at home.

But if the movie or video is really good at holding your attention, this can be a powerful way to lessen the severity of mental symptoms such as anxiety and depression.

What To Watch During Opiate Withdrawal

I’ve gone through opiate withdrawal several times. Early on I realized the importance of watching movies while detoxing at home.

I noticed that my suffering was much less severe when I was watching a really good movie. (Please Note that I was always able to procure some Valium or Xanax when detoxing from opiates at home. These opiate withdrawal remedies did a great job at reducing my opiate withdrawal symptoms, so the movie was able to effectively improve my mood.)

If I tried to do a cold-turkey detox without any strong opiate withdrawal remedies, there is no way a movie would help me. I would be going nuts!

Okay…back to movies:

During opiate withdrawal, if the movie I was watching was awesome, I became immersed in the story, which helped me take the focus off the withdrawal I was going through.

Here are the top 2 genres of movies I recommend for opiate withdrawal:

  • Comedy
  • Inspirational

Comedies help you laugh. When you laugh, you produce endorphins. Endorphins are natural painkillers that boost mood and reduce stress, and you’re severely deficient in these and other neurotransmitters while detoxing off opiates.

Inspirational movies can help you…well…feel inspired!!!

Have you ever watched a superb inspirational movie?

They make you feel really good, and that’s why I recommend watching plenty of them while you’re going through opiate withdrawal at home.

What To Avoid Watching

Along with watching comedies and inspirational movies during opiate withdrawal, you might also enjoy binge-watching a great show on Netflix.

Just be careful about what you watch.

Some types of movies and television programs can increase the production of stress hormones such as adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol, and they can actually increase your anxiety during opiate withdrawal.

I would stay away from watching the following genres during opiate withdrawal:

  • Horror
  • Suspense
  • Action

Also, DO NOT watch The News. Doing so will not be conducive to a healthy mindset while you’re going through opiate withdrawal.

The News rarely covers funny or inspirational stories.

Instead, it covers exciting stories about natural disasters, murder, scandals, arrests, and other things that are unpleasant to think about during opiate withdrawal.

My Top Movies and YouTube Videos For Opiate Withdrawal

I’ve been wanting to write this article ever since I watched a really awesome movie while on vacation in the desert.

By the end of the movie, I knew it would be very beneficial to watch for anyone going through opiate withdrawal at home.

That was over a year ago, and since then I’ve complied a nice little list of my favorite movies and YouTube videos to watch while detoxing from opiates at home.

Here are my top movie picks:

  • Wild
  • A Street Cat Named Bob
  • McFarland, USA
  • Where Hope Grows
  • The Blind Side
  • Neighbors
  • Neighbors 2
  • Office Space

Here are some search phrases I recommend using to browse YouTube videos during opiate withdrawal:

  • Motivational  Speeches
  • Inspirational Speeches
  • Stand Up Comedy
  • Funny Videos
  • Lous C.K.

Key Concepts

You may have different taste and preferences of movies and YouTube videos. If so, not to worry. Simply create your own list which consists of your unique preferences.

Here are the important key concepts to remember:

  • Movies and videos are only effective if you watch them after you’ve taken strong opiate withdrawal remedies.
  • Comedies and inspirational movies/shows/videos are the most beneficial genres to watch.
  • Make sure to at least stay away from horror films and News programs, as they are not conducive to relaxation during opiate withdrawal.

    Hey Matt,

I’m currently tapering from a 30 bag heroin habit per day. I’m down to 8 bags a day. I tried to go cold turkey a few days ago, popped a sub, and went into PAWS. It sucked. So I decided I needed to taper more and get down to 3 or 4 bags before making the leap.

Anyway I just found your site and its given me more hope that I can do this. Your tips are great and definitely going to use them this time around.

    Thanks
