Every person is a unique part of the interconnected web of humanity. We are all equipped and blessed with individualized gifts, talents, and abilities that distinguish us from our global community. When we all utilize our passions and manifest our dreams into reality, we contribute ourselves as unique pieces of the world-puzzle to form the beautiful artwork of life.
This completed puzzle, including all of us as unique “pieces,” is essential for creating a global network of united cultures, traditions, and interests. Every one of us is an irreplaceable and significant being who has amazing gifts. As we grow and mature, we gradually embrace our unique attributes and carve out our place in the world.
However, this requires a strong connection to ourselves, the development of a distinguishable identity that contributes to the whole, and the spark of creative enthusiasm for life. When these qualities lose strength, we may turn to drugs, become depressed, or give up on our dreams. In this state, we may lose our sense of identity and motivation for the vital vision of our lives.
We may also feel a sense of confusion, lack of belonging in the world, or boredom. Fortunately though, with the following five steps we can rekindle our enthusiasm for life by discovering our passions and creating an identity based on our strengths, developing our skills, expressing our unique abilities, and contributing to the world.
1. Discover your Passions
Many people never reach the first step! It takes self-awareness and observation, an understanding of your own strength, experience, and reflection to know what you are passionate about. Take some time to make a list of things that you absolutely love. What are some of your hobbies? What type of a person are you?
What kind of activities feed your soul and provide you with a zest for life? What did you love when you were a child or wanted to be when you grew up? What are some of your strengths? Take some time to get in touch with who you are and what gifts you have to offer the world. Even if things don’t jump out at you immediately, know that you certainly do have valuable, exceptional skills to offer the world. The world is just waiting for you to realize this!
2. Use the “Circle Exercise” to Manifest your Passions into Reality
This simple exercise helps to anchor abstract ideas into tangible areas of function. Begin by drawing one circle in the middle of a paper. Inside the circle, label the main area of your interest—your primary passion. For example, you can write “music,” “psychology,” or “photography.” Outside of that circle make branches with smaller circled words on the end.
These branches indicate specific categories that enable you to express your passion. For the “music” example, you can draw branches with “performing,” “teaching,” “workshops,” etc. on the end. Write as many categories as you can develop. For the final step, draw smaller branches from each of those categories.
These indicate the specific details of practical function for how you can bring your passions into the world. Under the “performing” branch you might write that you want to perform in open mics, restaurants, bars, nursing homes, or on the street. Be as specific and detail-oriented as possible.
3. Develop the Skills you Need to Pursue your Passions
Pursuing your passions often requires the ability to have self-discipline, commitment, time management skills, drive, creativity, and persistence. Begin by being realistic. If your dream is to develop the passion of music by performing at open mic nights, then begin by checking out different locations that host open mic nights, look at the times, practice your music, and actually perform at the events.
Keep your commitments, have the self-discipline to develop your skills, manage your time wisely so you are not cluttered with too many things to do, and use your creativity to think of new ways to implement your vision.
4. Replace Unhealthy Habits with your Passions
One of the drawbacks of not discovering and utilizing your passions are the development of unhealthy habits. These include things like drug addiction, excessive gambling, smoking, watching too much television, playing tons of video games, procrastination, and basically using any forms of escape in order to avoid the responsibility of living your highest potential.
It can be intimidating to realize how many talents you are blessed with, but know that the development of these passions will ultimately lead to a strong self-actualized identity that loves life. Make room for your passions by using the exercise in Step 2 to help you see the areas where you can make detailed progress towards your goals. Gradually begin to replace those old self-depleting habits with your passions and watch your life transform!
5. Envision your Dream Life
What would your life look like if you could fully realize your passions? What kind of a person would you be? What would you be doing? What other areas of your life will open up when you live in fullness with your highest potential? How much money would you like to make?
How many hours a week would you want to work? How much time would you like to devote to your passions, your family time, your friends, helping others, etc.? Visualize every detail of your life, including details like money, location, relationships, free time, and everything else. Create a full picture of yourself living the most fulfilled life you can imagine! Get creative! Envision yourself in a month, a year, and in 5 years.
Write and draw pictures for each of these time periods. Make detailed lists for the goals, action steps, and resources you require in order to transform your passions into reality. Put these lists or pictures on your wall (or somewhere visible) so that you can see it every day and cross off what you’ve accomplished. This also enables you to look forward to what you can accomplish in the future! Live life to the fullest of your abilities and remember what a gift you are to this world!
